letter to a rude cashier

dear fran,

as you may or may not know, shopping at safeway with two small children is a challenge at best. add to that the complication of juggling wic checks (which involves determining the precise oz. weight of boxes of cereal, scrambling to find the right checks so as not to waste precious gallons of milk, and signatures) and it is nearly impossible. your decision to announce to the entire line behind me in a snotty voice that "this woman is paying with wic checks and it's going to take a long time. you should probably switch lines..." further worsened the situation by making it humiliating. your huffing, puffing, eye-rolling, and intentional dragging out of the transaction was just unkind. making me re-sign the checks after already noticing me signing them as you checked out the man in front of me? scrutinizing the signatures as though i would steal checks and subject my children and myself to this embarrassment? i don't think so.

you could be me. tomorrow. and guess what? i told your manager. this afternoon.

love,
me
