so this morning we took lorenzo over to the office of birth and death records and made him official. rosanna met us there and the process was really quite simple. they are apparently used to dealing with home born babes. the social security administration office on the other hand is not. we had to go there to apply for his social security card (the hospital usually takes care of this). well, i had a fresh copy of his birth certificate in hand and a signed affidavit from rosanna stating that she delivered him at home blah blah blah. we fill out the form and hand the man our papers.
ss guy: don't you have his hospital records?
me: no, he was born at home (pointing to that fact on his birth certificate).
ss guy: oh. what city was he born in?
me: blahville (pointing to that fact on his birth certificate).
ss guy: (pause, typing) um, he needs another form of id.
me: (pointing to affidavit) this is it.
ss guy: didn't the hospital give you one?
r: he was born at home, he's never been to the hospital.
ss guy: how about a vaccine card?
me: he's not vaccinated.
ss guy: batismal record?
r: or baptised!
ss guy: well, i don't think this (affidavit) will work. lemme go ask. (he goes away and comes back). wait, is this a doctors note? (holding up affidavit).
me: no, he was delivered by a midwife. see, it says so on his birth certificate? (pointing to that fact on his birth certificate). she even signed it.
ss guy: oh. did she give him some sort of number?
r: number?
ss guy: yeah, like a code or an id number?
me: uh, no.
ss guy: (handing me papers) his card will arrive in four weeks.
me: thanks.
